Tryon Adventurer Club Hosts Safety Day
Posted on Dec 07, 2009
The Tryon Seventh-day Adventist church Adventurer club hosted Kids First Aid and Fire Safety Day on November 8th. This special day was organized by Pastor Arthur Gibbs to involve community presenters and invite neighboring Adventurer clubs. Other clubs from around the region included: Upward, North Carolina, as well as Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina. Pastor Gibbs challenges all Adventurer clubs to take turns hosting these types of learning events. His hope is for our communities to be impacted, and our clubs within the conference to get to know one another.
The sight of a large fire truck and kids running around carrying first aid supplies in the parking lot may have appeared as a state of emergency at first glance. Have no fear! With the help of fireman Joey Davis from the Tryon Fire department, fun moments of learning were flourishing. The shiny red engine was a hit with kids of all ages. As Joey our fireman revealed, "fire fighters just can't help looking good riding in that truck!" Joey instructed kids in the fine points of "Stop, Drop, and Roll," and then led the kids on a tour to every nook and cranny of the engine; certainly a clean machine!!!
Melinda Champion, from the Red Cross, jump started the day with a session on choking. Generously providing goodie bags stuffed with creative learning pages
to color and entertain, Champion wanted to make sure they remembered each lesson. Parents as well as kids were eagerly discovering how to help a friend in danger and avoid potential safety hazards. The goal was to learn how to save people's lives in everyday situations. The other five learning centers kids experienced included first response, minor cuts, bleeding, bandages, and sterilization. Each station was staffed by area health care professionals who attend the Tryon SDA church. Approximately 40 children completed the training while collecting pieces of their own first aid kit to take home. It was with pride that these precious kids shared their new knowledge and displayed their personally crafted first aid kit with supplies.
The Tryon Adventurer Club is an organization targeting children in the community, ages 3-9 years-old. It combines learning life skills with a higher goal of knowing and loving Jesus. Currently, the Tryon Adventurer club has 19 members and 9 adult counselors. Usually meetings are held two Wednesday nights each month during the school year. Pastor Gibbs' daughter is apart of the Tryon club and he has enjoyed his fatherly duties as counselor for one of the Adventurer classes this year. This vision of children participating in community involvement and bonding with their peers from church, created great memories and showed that by coming together we can accomplish much.
