Who Made South Carolina's Top 20 List?

Posted on Feb 23, 2010

Ernie Boughman, a member of the Columbia First church, received the distinct honor of making South Carolina's twenty under forty list for 2010. Along with the other recipients, Boughman met the criteria of achieving significant success in both a professional and community setting. The State, a local newspaper covering 10 counties, reviewed more than 140 nominations this year.

With an educational background in architectural design and city/regional planning his experience reflects the influence he has in the city of Columbia. Some of his projects include development plans near Fort Jackson and McEntire Air National Guard Base, and designing a bike and pedestrian pathway plan for the city of Columbia.

Ernie and his wife Gale are the proud parents of five year old Emma and a three old son named Alex. When Emma was diagnosed with leukemia the Boughman's courageously took on the fight. As a result, Ernie founded Emma's light to help raise money for the Palmetto Health Children's Hospital. He has raised $11,000 so far and Emma's cancer is currently in remission. "Emma's illness was what brought balance to my life. Prior to her being diagnosed with leukemia, I certainly loved and cared for my family, but work was my priority; 60-plus-hour workweeks were the norm. When you are told that your child has a potentially fatal disease, things come into perspective pretty quickly, and you realize that balance is critical and healthy. As odd as it may sound, my daughter's leukemia has been a blessing to me personally and for my family as a whole."
