Hide God's Word in Your Heart
Posted on Mar 11, 2010

For those of us who have trouble remembering names of people we just met, where we put the car keys or sometimes even why we walked into a room, attending a seminar on scripture memorization seemed somewhat a pointless endeavor. But in fact, it was all the more important for the memory-challenged among us to hear that there is hope; that with prayer, and just a few tricks and the right tools, anyone can hide the Word of God in their heart for a time of need.
And if you want to learn how to memorize scripture, Dr. Robert Banks is just the one to teach you. To date, Banks has more than 80 chapters of the Bible filed away in his brain, and has done his doctorate dissertation on scripture memorization. He was at the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Monroe this past February to share how he does it.
"There are many reasons why it's good to memorize scripture," Banks shared. "Once we have the motivation, we can move on to the methods." He went on to give seven basic techniques for scripture memorization.
1. Desire (commitment)
2. Prayerful Meditation
3. Proper Health and Diet
4. Golden Moments (using bits of time as they come)
5. Repetition
6. Association
7. Make a Covenant
He suggested printing verses onto small cards, or even cutting texts from old unused Bibles to have on hand at all times. Moments spent at a stoplight, waiting in line at the grocery or riding in an elevator can now be used to add a scripture to memory. But reading the verse is only the beginning. It takes every one of these seven steps to achieve success.
"I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word." Ps. 119:16. Begin today to deliberately add scripture to memory daily, even if it's just one word at a time. The more you do, the more blessings will abound and your memory will improve. Who knows? You may even remember where you put those car keys!
